English is vital for communicating with others in school and in the wider world, and is fundamental to learning in all curriculum subjects.
The English Department’s vision statement in collaboration with our pupils is:  to improve standards of writing, including vocabulary, spelling and punctuation;  to equip pupils with valuable skills that enable them to complete any form of writing style or task, whether creatively at home, or in their school learning; to encourage pupils to read and analyse a variety of genres and styles of texts whilst recognising the importance of both modern and classic literature; to encourage pupils to speak confidently during discussion, presentation or drama settings, whilst listening attentively to the thoughts of others.

Organisation of Classes
All pupils, across all four years, are set by ability for English. The groupings upon entry into the school in Year 5 are arrived at following data analysis of first school information and initial assessments in the Autumn Term. 


Intervention
All pupils are monitored through regular assessments taking place throughout the year.  Pupils requiring extra support in Reading or Writing elements are identified and work in small groups over a series of sessions.  During Year 6, Booster classes of approximately ten pupils at a time are provided to give extra intensive support to pupils in preparation for the National Key Stage 2 tests.  Similarly, in Year 7 pupils who have not achieved the national expected level of attainment in English are provided with ‘Catch-Up’ classes.

Curriculum Overview for Key Stage 2 and 3:

Key Stage 2:
The pupils in Key Stage 2 follow the new National Curriculum incorporating reading, writing, and spoken language activities.
Pupils in Year 5 consolidate and extend the knowledge and skills gained in Year 3 and Year 4.

Year 5 Units include:

  • Narrative Transition Unit (In collaboration with our feeder schools
  • Narrative poetry
  • Project – linked to the New Vic theatre performance that Y5 experience
  • Myths from other cultures
  • Titanic – Research and Recount writing
  • Presentation / Debate / Performance
  • Non-Fiction Units – Instructions, Explanation, Non-chronological report writing, Information, Recount, Discussion, Persuasion
  • Aesop’s Fables and Traditional Tales
  • The Firework Maker’s Daughter (by Philip Pullman)


Assessment takes place throughout the year for: Reading; Writing; Spelling and Grammar; and Spoken Language.
Pupils are set homework each week, which could be a written piece, research task or learning activity.

Year 6:
Throughout the year, pupils develop their reading, grammar and spelling skills towards the National SATs examinations that take place in May.  This is achieved through a range of activities delivered through the following units:

  • Narrative – Fiction Genres, Classic Fiction, Authors and Texts
  • Poetry – The Power of Imagery
  • Non- Fiction – Biography/Autobiography, Journalistic Writing, Argument, Non-chronological report writing
  • Unit Revision- SATs reading, spelling and grammar
  • Novel
  • Who was Shakespeare?
  • Presentation / Debate / Performance / Hot-seating / Performance
  • Poetry

Key Stage 3:

At Key Stage 3, we follow the New National Curriculum.  Pupils are expected to develop their reading and writing skills further.  Pupils embrace literature from different times, places and cultures, whilst writing for different audiences and purposes.  Assessment takes place throughout the year for: Reading; Writing; Spelling and Grammar; and Spoken Language through the following units:

  • Gothic Literature and poetry
  • Campaigns
  • Eye Witness/Detective
  • Survival
  • Novel
  • The World of Poetry
  • Writing to: Inform / Imagine / Describe / Explain / Advise
    Performance / Presentation

 

Year 8 Units

  • World Cultures
  • War – Literature and poetry from Pre-1914 and Post-1914
  • Issues – through contemporary novels
  • The World of the Media
  • Shakespeare – Romeo and Juliet
  • Writing to: Entertain / Inform / Explore / Advise / Persuade / Argue
    Performance Poetry / Debate / Hot-seating

Assessment

Assessment takes place throughout the year in many different forms to ensure that progress is being made in all aspects of English.  In KS2, a Reading and SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) test is taken every half-term.

During the official SATs examination week, pupils from all years will be tested on their reading, so it is important that attendance prior and during this week is excellent to prepare and achieve.

 

Extra-Curricular Activities and Opportunities

  • Pupils in Year 5 visit the New Vic theatre, Newcastle-Under-Lyme in their first term with usReading Club, Writing Club (entering competitions) Pupils are involved in the Youth Speaks (National Public Speaking) Competition each year
  • World Book Day activities and competitions
  • Pupils in Year 8 can choose poetry and lyric writing as a curriculum enrichment option
